COURSE NARRATIVE
The SPAN 307 class fulfilled MLO 3. In this class, I had the opportunity to learn about Mexico’s history, politics, culture and art. First, I learned about the Pre-columbian civilizations of Mexico. For example: the Olmecs, Aztecs, Mayans, etc. In addition, I learned about their art, architecture, social structure and principal activities for living. Dr. Gómez introduced us to the Spanish conquest and the effects it brought to the native people of Mexico. I was really impacted to know about the way many indigenous people were killed by forced labor and diseases. Later, we moved to the Mexico’s Independence movement that main purpose was to overthrow Spanish power from Mexico. Another, themes we discussed in class were the Mexican- American War, the Porfirian period, the modernization of Mexico and Mexican Revolution. Also, our class discussions helped me to better understand the conflicts Mexican society faced in different time periods .On another hand, one of the main projects of SPAN 307 was to complete a Learning Diary which is a reflection of each of the readings we discussed in class. It also includes actual events of Mexico that we had to read in order to keep us informed about what was happening in Mexico at that time (SPAN 307: Learning Diary). The Learning Diary made me reflect about the different readings we had in class but also all the social problems Mexican society suffered since the arrival of the Spanish conquerors. To conclude, this class provided me a lot of rich knowledge and specific details about the history, art, culture and politics of Mexico.
The document at your right is a Learning Diary of my class SPAN 307. It is a compilation of notes of the different readings discussed in class and also includes relevant events of Mexico.
